5 Quick Home Business Tips

Monday, April 12th, 2010

1. There’s no shame in looking for free options. However, more often than not, you get what you pay for.

2. If you have kids or visitors, make sure you know where the “mute” button is on your phone.

3. Make sure you get references, everytime.

4. It’s OK to invite your friends to try stuff with you or go to events. As long as that’s not all you’re doing. Use social media to share, not annoy. So no more than one promo every two weeks or so. Does that sound reasonable? See my earlier post: Invite Me Too! (Once.)

5. Never underestimate the power of before & after photos!!! Whether you are a personal organizer, video/photo editors, web designers, chefs, or even home theater system installers!

If you can think of more, do share. :)

Social Media’s Real Power

Monday, January 4th, 2010

I was browsing some websites during lunch today, and I happened across Chris Brogan‘s newest blog post called: Soul of a New Business. Of course, Chris had some great incite on building new business. He has become quite the success story because of tools like social media and then writing an inspiring book about it called “Trust Agents” along with his partner in crime, Julien Smith.

It never ceases to amaze me how social networking really can make or break a business! These days, it’s all about reputation. So, if you are a new business, how do you compete? I found Chris’s business soul is a set of questions to ask yourself important to share. And I will at the bottom of this post. However, before that, I want to share a simple, yet most profound statement, from one of his commenters, Natalie of Stark Media. She said,

Social media has done a great job of revealing which businesses prove helpful.

Simple right? Well, sometimes you “know” something without every really communicating it effectively. And you know what? I can’t think of a better way to say this. In a nutshell, this is what makes social media really powerful. Even if you are a brand new business with no reputation, social media will give you the opportunity to actually be helpful. It’s the best way of advertisement there is!

Anyone can buy air time or ads in the yellow pages and say: “Hey! I can make your life better!” Right? Social media, when used correctly, will PROVE you are awesome.

Now, for Chris’s List of Business Soul Set of Questions to Ask Yourself:

  • Would I want my mother or spouse to be marketed to the way I am marketing my business?
  • Are the products I am selling something I’d give to my family?
  • Are better/easier/more helpful ways of doing what I’m doing?
  • Am I approaching my business relationships in a balanced way, or am I just sitting here chomping at the bit to sell ? (People can tell the difference.)
  • At what price are my products and services worth?
  • Am I giving real value? or am I  just selling?

I changed this list into first person and put it in a bullet list, but you will find them and thousands of helpful tips for social networking and “how this human business” at ChrisBrogan.com.

Domain Life Expectancy

Sunday, August 9th, 2009

How long should I register your domain for?

Even for a startup business, it is advisable to register a domain for a minimum of 2 years. Search engines look at the date your domain expires, and if it is less than a year you will get a lower page score (Bing) and page rank (Google) right away.

Often it is cheaper to go ahead and register for 2 years than it is to register for 1 year and then 6 months down the road you realize that it is better search engine optimization to go ahead and tack on 1 or 2 more years of ownership.

Work at Home

Monday, July 13th, 2009

Where to find it.

craigslistCraig’s List

Start with finding your country, state, then the city located closest to you. Look under jobs, and you’ll find lots of great virtual job choices under “Gigs”. If you don’t see anything you are qualified to do, then look in other cities in the state or surrounding states. After all, working from home doesn’t require looking for work within commuting distance. Right? When you find your niche or your groove, you will be capable of having clients all over the world!

Freelance writing and coding jobs galore!

If you have a specialty, go post a profile.

If you need someone with a specialty, go post your project.

odesk

This has really earned a sort of bad rep from established professional online consultants, virtual assistants and freelancers. The reason is because it is known as the “online clearance section” for people who want to offer their services at something like $3.00 an hour! Which is really too low for anyone to do work for considering basically half our income goes to taxes so that’s really $1.50 an hour. The only thing I have to say is that this may be a good place to start. But after you get your first client’s work completed, make sure you ask for a reference and don’t sell yourself short anymore.  Your time is worth so much more than $1.50 an hour.

And on a side note, thanks to Virtual Assistant Forums, I also learned that oDesk offers Free Testing here to see where to qualify you for certain jobs. And if you pass these tests, then you can become “certified” through their site and prove you are qualified to employers. I am planning on looking into it further to see if it is (quality or not) something I may want to blog more about.

My Advice:

1. Be honest.

2. Work hard.

3. And keep track of everything.

4. Listen to your client, they’re always right.

Free Logo Creators

Friday, July 10th, 2009

So, you’ve named your business. What’s next? Get a logo! Professional logos can really get expensive.

So try one of these two great websites, they offer free online logo creators. I posted 2 samples from each site.

LogoEase.com

These 2 are from logoease.com. This site offers you free little clipart that you can customize your logo with. Edit fonts, colors of the little pics etc. Good setup. :)

 2.

CoolText.com

And these 2 are from cooltext.com. CoolText is great because, it’s fast and you don’t have to sign up to use the app. But there are no pictures to include in your logo. This one is kind of my favorite ;)

Free E-mail for Business

Sunday, June 14th, 2009

Email is the single most important tool that you will use in your new virtual office. You will use it for communication, record keeping and scheduling. The biggest and best free e-mail providers are yahoo, hotmail, and google’s gmail. Even if you already have an e-mail address, you really should set up a separate e-mail address account for your work at home. You are less likely to miss important messages from clients when they are not mixed in the same inbox as your friend’s forwards and your J Crew e-subscription right? You should look for e-mail that is free (at first of course, later if you have extra money you can spend whatever you want on e-mail. Heck, maybe you’ll be able to pay someone else to deal with your e-mail for you!) Ok, back to reality. Look for a service that gives you lots of space, and a free calendar to keep track of appointments and remind you to send your clients updates etc.
