If social media is so powerful that it is affecting our youth on such a deep level, then we must see to it that these powers start getting used for good.

This is sadly becoming a common issue. It could easily become even more common if children are left wading through the masses of social networking sites without a firm grasp on reality and heavy dose of self-assurance. Adolescent socializing is hard enough without adding the global factor of public confrontations. Education and the freedom to be open with a parent or other grown up support system when they are unsure of how to handle certain situations alone will save kids like Ryan, Megan, Phoebe, and Alexis.

Restriction is not the answer.

Many parents and teachers are concerned about sites like MySpace, Facebook, and Twitter providing too much information to and by our youth. Some believe that denying children (including teens) access to social networking sites will protect them from harm. It’s time to get real. Kids will find ways to set up online profiles at their friends’ houses, at school, or even at the local libraries. Electronic harassment is also happening via text messaging, instant messaging, and email.

Re-purposing social networking is the only answer.

Not only is it possible to used to emotionally hurt people, but I believe that it could really save people too. Social networking services that allow continual access to new resources for education and other public services. Students could talk to tutors on MySpace when they are having trouble with a certain homework problem. Alcoholics could get on Facebook and talk to AA leaders and members, even on Friday nights when their buddies are texting them to come out to the bars. Could Twitter become a useful part of the emergency broadcast system by tweeting weather warnings and Amber alerts to everyone’s cell phone within a targeted demographic area?

Ignoring it won’t make it go away.

Social media is swiftly bringing our world into a new age whether we are ready to see the change or not. Before, it was all about information, now it is all about sharing information. Social media could be the answer to some of society’s problems or it could make them much worse. If we decide to look the other way and tell ourselves that it won’t happen to our family, then the problem will get worse. We don’t have to sit by miss this opportunity for growth. We just need to learn how to use it appropriately, then we must teach our children.

No death should be in vain.

Dedicated to: Rachel Burdine, my best friend in middle school committed suicide at age 13. You could have really done so many great things. I still miss you.

Short Essay About My Internet Job

The Internet uniquely provides us with a wide variety of “truth” and a sort of bi-product of “experience”. As I see it, you have two choices with this powerful medium of communication. You can either accept it at face value or press on to learn more and come to your own conclusion. At thirteen, I began doing tech support for a small ISP (Internet Service Provider) in the small town I grew up in. Anything you learn on the internet is available to learn somewhere else. However, the time that it would take to research and validate your data could easily take hours, days, and in many cases years to come to the same conclusions that now come with simply typing in the right keywords into Google or Wikipedia.

The Internet has also produced a new problem with its exponentially growing number of solutions. The problem will come when so many answers will be available online yet so many “experts” are online preaching their version of the truth. How will we verify our international network of shared “answers”? Will we be believed if we come to a different conclusion? The truth is I have no idea. However, I choose to see the Internet for its possibilities and dare to hope that its “powers” will be used for good.

The Internet is now the source of my work life and the reason I am able to have such a fulfilling personal life. I am a work at home mom now. I am going to keep my Internet job even when both of my children are in school and I am home alone. (By then, I plan to open a new office outside of my home.) The discipline or knowledge it takes to really make money while working from a home office is not going to be found in some scammy “make money online by doing absolutely nothing” program that are unfortunately too popular nowadays. My life’s ambition has even become helping other talented parents work online and still be able to be there for their kids when they need them.

The Self Conscious Smile

In middle school and high school, I thought I had “dodged a bullet” by not having to deal with braces. Well, the thing was, I was presented the idea as an option by the orthodontist that I visited at 13, maybe 14. The truth was, my teeth were pretty straight. However, I had a cross-bite. Whenever you have any kind of issue like that, let me tell you right now. . . it’s going to get worse. As soon as your wisdom teeth start coming in, it will get worse.

Not many people turn 25 and get braces. I did. I have no idea why, but I let a dentist (that I really didn’t like) convince me that I had to get braces. (I was clenching my teeth as I slept and hurting my jaw.) When it’s over, I will probably be very grateful. So, here I am, 26, and next month I’ll be 27.  I think I may have them for 2 more months, and seriously I have had these braces for so long it feels like I haven’t really been able to smile with confidence in almost 2 years. I wasn’t nearly as self conscious with crooked teeth. ;) I can’t wait to spend my 27th year without metal constantly cutting into the sides of my cheeks and spending forever and a day flossing. If I had gotten them when I was younger, then my teeth wouldn’t have needed them again. Not even after my wisdom teeth. Just maybe a retainer? I dunno.

The moral of the story:

If your kids have a need for braces. . . don’t let them avoid it. Make them get braces when they are younger, and their teeth aren’t already set in their ways! Besides, everyone looks goofy in during adolescence right? LOL! My daughter who is 7 1/2 already has her braces. And she LOVES them. Of course, it might just be because, mom has them so they must be cool right?

My Mission in Life

The Issue:
Corporations and Small Businesses of America have fallen short of efficiently utilizing the opportunities and immeasurable benefits that come with the option of working at home. Telecommuting efforts have been blemished due to employees who have worked from home and been inadequately managed by “technically challenged” superiors. The shortage of procedures and tracking systems, and even employees with a poor work ethic have closed the door for managers or coworkers altogether. Many different scenarios have all contributed to the prevention of work at home program success.

Purpose:
The purpose of darkbluesun is to pave the way for stay at home moms and stay at home dads to work from home part time in a position that is relevant to their chosen professional field. This organization is being built with the motivation to be the best resource for anyone planning to start an online business or start an online division of a corporation. The importance of staying on your career path while going to school, raising a family or even when you have fallen ill is becoming greater and greater as technology advances. There are so many business professionals who need more than 24 hours in a day to get everything done. Virtual Assistants have been the answer to this problem. Taking a few hours out of every week day to make sure skills are kept sharp yet the stresses of working long hours in a busy office building are not hindering your most important work: taking care of your family and/or yourself.

Mission:
To restore balance to the American family and work life, to prevent modern professionals to have to choose between their career and their family and to standardize the processes for employers and employees to enjoy the benefits of telecommuting.

Objectives:

  • Educate stay at home parents to be valuable work at home parents.
  • Keep parents who choose to stay home and raise their children and stay on their career paths.
  • Avert scams that take advantage of the oppressed professionals of this economic situation.

Strategies:
I plan to build a large network of verified and trained Virtual Assistants to execute large projects for online business branches of companies. And then use the same resources and training programs that prove effective to larger business to train large corporations and all types of business to implement telecommuting and job sharing opportunities.

Products:
To offer free resources including an online VA library, VA checklists, eBook How to’s, educational software and eventually a free virtual classroom for anyone who wants to join the effort or begin their own entrepreneurial venture.

Practice:
With honesty, integrity, innovation, and education we can change the world – one business at a time.

Profitability:
It can take years to get a new business off the ground. These resources are going to be driven to save time, money and relieve stress. These benefits are priceless.
